School Honor Code

Education is the training of the mind, body, and soul for some greater purpose. When education is successful an individual's character improves: They become more honest, more fair, more respectful, and they gain a sense of distinction for their efforts. In short, education brings us HONOR. To remind us of the importance of honor in education, Craftsbury Academy has created the School Honor Code. The Honor Code at Craftsbury Academy reminds us all of the positive behaviors expected of us. We all should Protect Safety, Engage in Learning, and Build Community. These three ideas are positive statements of the kind of behavior that allows us to HONOR this historic institution, the other members of our school community, and especially ourselves.

A. Protect Safety - All members of our school community should help create a safe learning environment by avoiding which would bring harm to ourselves or others. This includes:
  • Avoid needless risks, in order to protect ourselves and others from physical harm
  • Display compassion, in order to protect the emotional wellbeing of others
B. Engage in Learning -  All members of our school community should personally engage in each opportunity to learn in order to enjoy the full benefits of education. This includes:
  • Focus on academics, in order to avoid disrupting others
  • Strive for honesty, in order to truly earn the reward of education
C. Build Community - All members of our school community are valued, and we should make every effort to both contribute to and welcome others into this community. This includes:
  • Demonstrate respect, in order to instill a sense of value and belongiing in others
  • Paritipcate in activities, in order to maintain our own motivation and sense of belonging

Students who seek to fulfill these expectations not only bring honor to themselves, they also bring honor to their school community. To achieve this, these expectations will be taught and emphasized wherever possible, and all members of the school community will be expected to abide by these expectations. When a person signs this honor code they are acknowledging that they understand these expectations.

School Honor Code Guidebook

A. Purpose of the Honor Code -

The Craftsbury Academy Student Council has created the School Honor Code to provide students and faculty with an overview of the positive behavior expectations that all members of our school community are held to. The positive expectations are (1) Protect Safety, (2) Engage in Learning, and (3) Build Community. Students will be taught these expectations in various ways during the school year.

B. The Honor Code as a Passport -

Students will be asked to sign the honor code showing that they have read it, and agree to do their best to meet these expectations. By signing and adhering to the honor code students will be able to participate in school wide activities hosted by Student Council (or the Activities Committee), such as Autumnfest and Winter Carnival. The honor code acts as a passport to participate in many school activities.

C. Honor Code Referrals -

Students and staff will be able to anonymously report on student success in relation to these expectations. The referral forms will be available in locations around the school and can be handed in to any homeroom teacher or the office. These forms will be evaluated by the Student Council. The Student Council may choose to recognize and reward students who perform admirably in relation to the positive behavior expectations.

D. Recognition by the Student Council -

The Student Council will review the referrals and determine the appropriate action. Students may be publicly recognized for their positive performance in relation to these expectations. They may be honored at an assembly and awarded some prize. Negative performance in relation to these expectations will be referred to administration. This process is not meant to be an alternate to the enforcement of school rules.

E. The House Cup Competition -

The four high school classes will compete in a yearlong house cup competition. Points will be awarded through class participation in school activities and will accumulate during the school year. Students recognized for positive performance in relation to these expectations will earn bonus points for their class in the house cup competition, as determined by the Student Council.
